Cool Things that I’m Getting Screwed Out of.
After a long dearth of
independent horror material on New Bedford public access, Penny Dreadful
has been good enough to bring ‘Shilling
Shockers’ to a large chunk of the southern Massachusetts-y area.
‘Shockers’ is a showcase for classic public domain horror films featuring
three charismatic horror hosts in the grand old tradition. Of course, I switched
over to satellite last year so I no longer get public access.
Crap.
UPN and the WB have recently merged to form
the new CW network. Now on its face this may seem to signal the further
homogenization of American culture, but it’s actually going to be beneficial
in the long run. There can be only one CW network in any given market,
therefore, some of the old UHF stations which converted to WB or UPN will now
have to once again purchase or even (*gasp*) produce their own unique
programming. In the Boston market, WSBK 38 has been left out in the cold, though
I see this more as an opportunity than a crisis. Personally, I would have
preferred that WLVI 56 be forced to drop out of prepackaged programming, as it
may have given them pause to consider resurrecting the old ‘Creature
Double Feature’ on a permanent basis. (Although it’s a moot point, as I
don’t get either station on satellite. Crap.)
Speaking of which, 56 did recently bring the ‘Creature
Double Feature’ back for a one time special appearance. Ernie Boch Jr.
...er, sorry... The Ghoul did a magnificent job hosting two ridiculous
giant monster movies, and his sidekick Stump added just the right touch. While I
don’t get WLVI anymore, my friend Joe was good enough to tape it for me.
