Cannibal: The Musical

Plot:

A musical comedy from the creators of South Park, based on the true life story of Alfred Packer, the notorious Colorado cannibal.

Comments:

Resilient bugger, he is. I love ‘South Park’, it’s one of the funniest shows on tv, and I catch it whenever I can. In fact, I love it almost as much as I hate that crappy little show ‘South Park’, which I never watch.

Maybe I should unpack that statement for you. Seems like I can watch the show one week and see a brilliant and biting send up of the pressing issues of the day, and the next week they give me a bunch of crap, wiener, and puke jokes. Parker and Stone are the quintessential talented but lazy film students, the kind that drive their instructors to drink.

Thankfully while ‘Cannibal’ doesn’t shy away from cheap gags, it keeps the truly icky ones to a minimum. In place of mountains of gross-out humor, the film possess a sharp wit, a genius for timing, and an abiding sense of the ludicrous.

And of course, if you’re familiar with the  history of Alfred Packer, or you're just a 'Ravenous' fan (and I know I am! ) you’ll get an extra little added kick out of this.Did they pay these people with pot? How in the hell did this thing get made?

Despite some bad word of mouth associated with the film, I have no qualms about recommending it. The writing is subtly humorous, yet entirely twisted. The production values appear much higher than they have any right to be, with huge choreographed production numbers taking place on rather realistic old west sets. Watching the film, it's hard to believe it was made for about $14.73 and released by Troma. The over the top acting is well in tune with the proceedings, and the music, ah, the music.

Well it is a musical after all, and you can’t jeer the tunes for being catchy. Or maybe you can. When I say catchy, I mean smallpox level catchy. The songs are a little too good. They nest in your brain like an earwig and refuse to dislodge. This may be a burden for some, but I welcomed them, as they were the only thing that finally knocked Darius Rucker’s 'Chicken Crisp Bacon Cheddar Ranch' Burger King ® jingle out of my cerebellum. If I’ve just stoked its embers in yours, I’m sorry. But hey, all the more reason to see ‘Cannibal’!
