Why I Can't Review "Common Foe"

I’ll keep this fairly short; the point of what I’m saying is that I don’t have much to say. Image comics recently released a series of comics entitled “Common Foe”. It’s an intriguing concept, soldiers in WW2 Europe encounter evil demons. (As apposed to friendly demons.) As a narrative framework, it’s been attempted before, sometimes the results work out really well (‘Return to Castle Wolfenstein’) sometime abysmally (‘The Keep’). I always found the concept of nazi bastards being torn to shred by the forces of Hell enthralling in a 30’s pulpy kinda way. So I picked up the first issue of the series.

Nothing happens, or rather lots of stuff happens with no context or explanation. There’s shooting, yelling , monsters eating people, just no characters or story whatsoever. The artwork is so-so. The ink and pencil work is ok, but the color stinks. Various monochromatic panels of gray and brown may realistically portray the tedium of war, but it’s a big snoozeroo to anyone actually looking at your book. To be fair, I think the series is going to get better, I think the story will be fleshed out, and the players will develop some personality. I think that, but I don’t know, and I can’t be unfair and review something I’m never going to read. At $3.50 a pop, I see no reason to pick up subsequent installments in a series that failed to grab my attention, or even spark some level of interest.
