Rosemary's Baby
Plot:
In Roman Polanski’s masterpiece, a young woman begins to suspect that there is a diabolical conspiracy centered around her pregnancy.
Comments:
I’m not going to go overboard in my analysis of this film, I know when I’m
licked! It’s a classic, and I’m sure any thing I could say about it has been
said before. Therefore, you’ll forgive me for being brief.
Let me just say that Polanski’s direction is magnificent. The film incorporates a deliberate slow pace in order to built suspense, but frankly, the story and visuals are so riveting that you’ll never notice. You know the film is building to something, unfortunately, you know what it’s building to.
Yes, while the film is just as ooky as it was way back in the 60’s (the dark ages, after the fall of the concept of ‘taste’) it can’t really be as effective. ( Unless of course, you’re an expectant mother. For the love of crap, do not watch this if you are pregnant!) You see, the problem is, this is essentially a mystery story, where the solution is well know. Pull any shlub off the street and ask them what “Rosemary’s Baby” is about, and they’ll reply, “That’s the movie were Mia Farrow gets knocked up by the devil!” Don’t matter if you’ve seen it or not, you know how it ends. But this shouldn’t be a dissuasion, oh heavens no! The film stands on its own due to the utter perfection of its writing, acting, and cinematography.
Be sure to look for a cameo by the film’s producer, the lovable B-Movie god William Castle, in the scene where Rosemary is hogging a phone booth. (Wow, remember phone booths?)
